How to Attract Gen-Z Employees (Who Love to Travel)

Generation Z, made up of young people born between 1997 and 2012, is beginning to gain a foothold in the workforce and, as it is natural, will be a key part of it shortly. This generation brings fresh air but also many changes, some from the hand of their predecessors, the millennials, a global pandemic, and the so-called Great Resignation.

How are Gen-Zs as workers? These are some of their key features according to TalentLMS and BambooHR:

  • They have values. Over 75% of them want to work for companies that put diversity, equity, and inclusion first, and, for them, a great place to work is one with kind, caring, and socially conscious co-workers.
  • They care for their mental health. Over 80% of them think it’s important to have ‘mental health days’ and over 30% find it difficult to cope with stress and pressure in the workplace.
  • They want flexibility. A vast majority of Gen-Z employees prefer a hybrid work model with an option to work from home.

Gen Zers will make up 24% of the workforce by the end of this year, and 30% of it by 2030, so it is time to start understanding the needs of this generation and to prepare to provide them with the optimal working environment to develop their full potential. After all, companies will also benefit from their success in the long run.

So, what do you need to consider to attract (and retain) Gen-Z employees?

1. Stay true to your values

A company's culture and values are highly appreciated by Gen Zers when choosing their workplace. They want to be able to identify with the company they work for, so, if they have chosen you, you need to be up to par. During the recruitment process, did you say you were a flexible company? Prove it by offering flexibility. Did you say you cared about social causes? Develop social projects and involve your employees. Did you say you cared for the environment? Stop. Printing. Everything. You get the gist.

2. Be flexible!

If flexibility is not your strong suit, it might be time to start changing your mindset. The world is changing and new generations need more freedom. Flexibility is key when it comes to attracting and retaining Gen-Z employees. And do not worry, this does not have to mean you will sacrifice performance or productivity - on the contrary! Trusting employees, offering them a healthy work environment, and caring about work-life balance have a positive impact on their motivation and performance.

3. Let them grow

For both Gen Zers and millennials, it is very important to be able to learn and grow in the workplace, improving as professionals while performing their jobs. For young people, it is not only important to have a good salary, but also that the company they work for does not limit them. That is why you should let them grow, and offer them training and opportunities for improvement. Honestly, this will pay off for you in the long run as well, so consider it an investment.

4. Be open to new ways of working

Along the same lines of flexibility, it is important to understand that the way we work these days has changed. An employee's productivity should not be measured by how many hours they spend sitting in their chair anymore, but rather that they accomplish their tasks and achieve their goals. The way they do it? Let them choose it!

Moreover, this generation is 100% digital and, in many cases, is capable of doing everything they need by using a computer alone. Maybe they want to work and travel at the same time. Maybe they want to spend more time with their family and friends. Is this possible for your company? Then why cling to outdated systems from the past?

5. Reward them with travel!

One thing that works wonders to attract and retain talent is employee incentives. If you achieve your goals, you get rewarded. But how do you choose the right incentives? Well, Gen Zers are travelers! Their mentality is one of experiences over things. And actually, 65% of them would rather take a dream vacation than purchase a new car. So, travel rewards it the way to go. At Inspira, we have the best employee travel benefits, which you can learn more about here.
